Intellectual Property: Who Owns Knowledge?

Intellectual Property: Who Owns Knowledge?

Ever wonder who really owns the ideas we create, share, and build on? This session introduces the basics of IP—copyrights, patents, trademarks, and open licenses—and how these tools shape who controls access to creative and scholarly work. You’ll learn how IP affects your rights as a creator and how it connects to bigger questions about ownership, innovation, and public access. Using real examples from Auburn—both individual and institutional—we’ll explore how IP works in everyday situations, from protecting personal projects to managing university research and branding.
